Students will build a house on a former blighted property in Lebanon, Mo.

The Lebanon School District bought this property on Hoover Street from the city. The city condemned it. And the city had the old house here torn down. Now students will build a new house there.

The district broke ground on their project this morning in a ceremony with community leaders. Then the kids got right to work on excavation and measuring out where the footings for their foundation will go. They will do everything from the framing to the roofing.

Students with the Lebanon technology and career center will be out here each day, one group for a few hours in the morning and another for a few hours in the afternoon. Donations from businesses and individuals in the community will help with supplies.

Students even created their own construction company for this project, which they're calling Construction Technology Cares, and they all have a specific job. It's giving them all some good hands-on experience in the construction industry.

"Construction was just one of the things that, I like to be able to look back at a day and know that, oh I did this," said Breanna Carruth, Lebanon Technology and Career Center student. "And be able to drive down the street and, oh yeah, we built that house. We're making our community better. Because before we got this house, it was actually a pretty bad nuisance in this neighborhood."

The Lebanon Technology Career Center students hope to finish this construction project in about a year-and-a-half. Once the house is completed, the school district will put it up for sale.
